Biography

Professor Lin received his BSEE from National Taiwan University (NTU), MS from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and his Ph. D. from University of California, Berkeley.....

He joined AT&T Bell Labs’ Laser Sciences Research Department, Communication Sciences Research Division, Holmdel, NJ, in 1974. At Bell Labs, his research included studies of nonlinear optics in fibers, self-phase-modulation, and four-wave-mixing for optical frequency conversion, supercontinuum generation, Raman amplification in fibers as well as dynamic optical frequency chirp studies in high-speed semiconductor laser modulation for high-bit-rate fiber transmission systems. He was the inventor of the tunable infrared fiber Raman lasers, and both dispersion-shifted fibers (DSF) and dispersion-compensating fibers (DCF).  DSF and DCF have become the ubiquitous fiber infrastructure of today’s long-haul high-speed fiber transmission systems and global undersea optical fiber networks. He received an IEE Electronics Letters Premium award for his work on DSF. In 1984 he was on leave from Bell Labs as a Visiting Guest Professor at the COM Center of the Tech. Univ. of Denmark.

After the AT&T divestiture, he joined Bellcore (Bell Communications Research) as Director of Broadband Lightwave Systems Research. He led a group working on broadband optical access architectures and technologies such as FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home), FTTC, HFC systems, DWDM tunable filters and EDFAs for high-capacity digital and analog lightwave video systems. He then worked in Tyco Submarine Systems R & D Labs (formerly AT&T Submarine Systems) on DWDM global long-haul undersea fiber networks, and later also he founded Jedai Broadband Networks, a startup on broadband high-speed fiber access optical networks .

From 2003 to 2007 he was with Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as Chair Professor of Photonics for both the Electronic Engineering and Information Engineering departments. He was Director of the Institute of Optical Science and Technology, and Center for Advanced Research in Photonics at CUHK.  The Center was actively engaged in advanced research on Broadband Optical Access Networks, Advanced Lightwave Communications Systems and Technologies, and Nonlinear Photonic Signal Processing using Photonic Crystal Fibers.  The Center also initiated a small research effort in establishing a Biophotonics Laboratory, with research work on SPR-based Bio-Sensing, Confocal Microscopy for Bio-Imaging and fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy in hollow-core Photonic Crystal Fibers for Biosensing, etc. for basic studies such as apoptosis of cancer cells, as well as applied biomedical diagnosis such as non-invasive monitoring of oxygen-levels in blood cells.  Under the guidance of Prof. Lin, the Center has also organized several internal symposia and workshops covering many areas of advanced photonics.

Professor Lin has published over 180 papers and international conference presentations, contributed several invited book chapters and holds 17 patents. He was an Associate Editor for IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology and IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, and was on the technical program committees for OFC (Optical Fiber Communications Conference), Optical Amplifier Topical Meeting, Topical Meeting on Optical Networking, etc. He was also on the technical program committee for European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) conferences.  He has edited 2 books; the recent one on “Broadband Optical Access Networks and Fiber-to-the Home” published by Wiley in August 2006.

He is a Fellow of both IEEE’s LEOS (Lasers and Electro-Optical Society) and OSA (Optical Society of America).  He has served as a Technical Advisor to industrial R and D labs of ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute) in Hsinchu, Taiwan and ASTRI (Applied Science and Technology Research Institute) in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park.  He has been a Technical Advisor to National Chiao-Tung University’s Research Excellence Projects in Photonics.  In addition to being a Nanyang Professor at the School of EEE, Nanyang Technological University, NTU, in Singapore. He is currently also a Guest Chair Professor of National Chiao-Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, and a Bao Yu-Gang Guest Chair Professor of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

He has over 140 papers and conference presentations, several invited book chapters and 9 patents. He was an Assoc. Editor for IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology and IEEE Photonics Technology Letters and was on the technical program committees for OFC, Optical Amplifier Topical Meeting, Topical Meeting on Optical Networking and NFOEC. He has been a Guest Professor of National Chiao Tung University (Hsinchu, Taiwan) and Tsinghwa University (Beijing). He also served as an Advisor to ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute), Hsinchu, Taiwan and CHT-TL (Telecom Labs of Chung-Hwa Telecom), Taiwan. He is a Fellow of both IEEE and OSA.
