Professor K. W. Cheung joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Dec.1992. From 1996 – 2001, he served as the founding Director of the Centre for Innovation and Technology with a one-time University grant of $24M. The mission of the Centre is to facilitate the growth of the local high tech industry and to spin off new technology startups from the University. A number of CUHK technology startups have been spun off from the Centre, including Wisers Information Limited and Dinastech Limited, receiving over $10M USD venture capital funding. To facilitate the technology transfer from the University, he proposed the formation of the Information Networking Laboratories Ltd. (INL) as a wholly owned subsidiary of the CUHK Foundation. He served as the founding Managing Director of INL from 1997 to 2001. The annual profit of INL reached $4M HKD when he retired from both INL limited and CINTEC because of health concern.
From 1987 to 1992 he worked for Telcordia Technologies (formerly the Bell Communications Research) in New Jersey, USA, and had participated in many research areas in broadband communications including network protocols, local distribution networks, optical networks, WDM technologies and devices. He is best known for his research contributions in all optical network and wavelength routing network, and in advancing the wavelength filtering technologies. He has jointly authored over a hundred journal and conference papers (with over six hundred SCI hits) , and holds five U.S. Patents with many others pending.
