The MPhil-PhD programme contains two streams, namely, the MPhil stream and the PhD stream. A student will be admitted to either the MPhil stream as an MPhil student or the PhD stream as a PhD student. Transfer between the two streams is possible by approval from the Department and the Graduate School.
MPhil Stream
The MPhil degree is research oriented. The normative period is 2 years for full-time students and 3 years for part-time students. Besides course requirements, an MPhil student is expected to perform independent research and submit a satisfactory thesis. The student must also attend an oral examination to present his/her work to a thesis committee approved by the IE Department.
PhD Stream
The normative period is 3 to 4 years for full-time students depending on their entrance qualifications. All students will be admitted to the pre-candidacy stage and have to pass the candidacy requirements to progress to the post-candidacy stage. The candidacy requirements include a written examination and a thesis proposal. In order to obtain the PhD degree, a student (post-candidacy) must submit a doctoral thesis on original research work. The student must also attend an oral examination to present his/her research to the thesis committee approved by the IE Department.
