Identify your enterprise, branch office, and team members

2.     Inspect all your hardware equipment

Identify your router, switch, and Linux/windows hosts.

3.     Set all your hosts, router and switch hostname and password

Through the VM remote console to set up your Linux hosts hostname and password. There is no need to configure the hosts network interface and IP. You will do it in next mission. Just set the hostname of these hosts according to your headquarter prescribed value. Send your root passwords to headquarter (i.e. your tutor).

Through the terminal server to access your router and switch console. There is no need to configure the network interface and IP. Just set the hostname and login password according to your headquarter preset value. Again, send your enable passwords to headquarter (i.e. your tutor).

Message 1 from your TCO

When you telnet to your router or switch at the first time, you will see

the following prompt:

Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:

(if nothing come up after telnet, just hit return)

You can type "yes" to start the setup or "no" to skip it.

If you type "yes" to start the setup, the router/switch will ask you a

series of questions.  If  you do not know the answer, just type "no"

to skip it as you can always get back to it later. After the set up,

you can type "enable" to enter the enable mode (as indicated by

a # prompt) which you can have the privilege to change the configuration

of your router/switch. In the enable mode, you can type

"show config" to see the current configuration and "config term" to

modify the current configuration. You can type "copy run start" to

save your current configuration to NVRAM so that your configuration will

not be lost after reboot.

If you type "no" to skip the initial set up, you can enter the enable

mode and use "config term" to set up your switch/router hostname and

password, or type "setup" to enter initial setup dialog.

In any mode, you can always type "?" to show up the help menu.

To leave the telnet session, just hit "^]" and type "quit"

Try to play around your switch and router, and get familiar with its

IOS software. You can get the ISO software documents from www.cisco.com.

Please do not print them out.  They are huge. Most engineers only view

them on-line.

As for your Linux hosts,  you may look at the file

/etc/sysconfig/network, man hostname and man passwd. If you do not know what

is man, type "man man". You can find most useful

Linux documents at http://www.tldp.org/
