Task 4

Setting up SNMP and MRTG

Task 4.1 Enable the snmpd for all hosts (Dificulty = 2)

• Configure the /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf  
• Change read community string
• Change system contact information 
• Define the access control
• Define the "enterprises.ucdavis" oid so as to query the host memory used percentage and memory cache percentage (hint: you may use the free command)
  
• Start up the snmpd
• Use snmpwalk or snmpwalk to verify the correctness of your snmp setting

Task 4.2 Setup MRTG at your firewall host (Difficulty = 2)

• Configure /etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg 
• To monitor all network interfaces traffic for each host (hint: using cfgmaker)
• To monitor memory used percentage and memory cache percentage at each host

• Enable the httpd at your firewall and put the mrtg web page link on the front page
• To show some traffic pattern on your mrtg web page, you may use /usr/bin/ttcp to generate some traffic from one host to another.
