Task 4
Setting up SNMP and MRTG
Task 4.1 Enable the snmpd for all hosts (Dificulty = 2)
- Configure the /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
- Change read community string
- Change system contact information
- Define the access control
- Define the "enterprises.ucdavis" oid so as to query the host memory
used percentage and memory cache percentage (hint: you may use the free command)

Start up the snmpd
- Use snmpwalk or snmpwalk to verify the correctness of your snmp setting
Task 4.2 Setup MRTG at your firewall host (Difficulty = 2)
- Configure /etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg
- To monitor all network interfaces traffic for each host (hint: using
cfgmaker)
- To monitor memory used percentage and memory cache percentage at
each host
- Enable the httpd at your firewall and put the mrtg web page link on
the front page
- To show some traffic pattern on your mrtg web page, you may use /usr/bin/ttcp
to generate some traffic from one host to another.
