We are thrilled to share that the paper “AquaScan: A Sonar-based Underwater Sensing System for Human Activity Monitoring” has won the sole Best Paper Award at MobiCom 2025, out of a total of 588 submissions. This marks the first time in the 31-year history of MobiCom that the prestigious Best Paper Award has been presented to a Hong Kong university.
The paper’s first author, Haozheng Hou, is a PhD student co-supervised by Prof. Guoliang Xing and Prof. Zhenyu Yan. Haozheng and his teammates have been working on this project for the past three years, conducting data collection and system testing across several residential swimming pools in Yuen Long and on Hong Kong Island. The developed technologies have been deployed at the Heng Fa Chuen swimming pool on Hong Kong Island, serving thousands of swimmers for more than two years.
At the same conference, Siyang Jiang, a PhD student supervised by Prof. Xing, received the Best Artifact Reviewer Award. This award recognizes his significant contributions and thoughtful evaluations in assessing the reproducibility of submitted papers’ source code and experiments.
Congratulations to the team for this prestigious recognition.
