Admission (applicable for broad-based engineering students admitted to CUHK in 2021-22)
Allocation policy into MIEG from broadband engineering students (2021-22 intake)
- Students interested in MIEG: You should mark your preference for a combined IERG/MIEG choice and then tick the box showing interest for the MIEG programme.
- (a) If you are under the guaranteed admission scheme you will be assigned to MIEG directly.
(b) If you are under the regular admission exercise, then the MIEG programme will take into account your performance in the math, science, and engineering courses in your first year and notify (within 48 hours of the major allocation result) whether you were successfully admitted into the MIEG programme. (Please read the following advice to understand the guidelines for admission into MIEG).
There are two possible outcomes in this case:
- You have been admitted into this wonderful but demanding programme: congratulations!!!
- If you were not given admission into the MIEG programme, you will be formally admitted into the IERG programme. We may invite some students to take MATH 1050 in Term 3 to see if they are suitable for transfer into the MIEG programme after a year.
Please follow the appeal deadlines stated by the Faculty of Engineering if you would like to appeal your allocation result.
Note: Admitted students under this scheme should adopt the study scheme with Faculty Package of Engineering.
Admission for students in first year in Broadbased Scheme of the Faculty of Science (or Enrichment Mathematics stream)
The procedure for admission into the MIEG programme is by officially applying for a "transfer of major".
- Note: You will be unable to apply for the transfer of major online via CUSIS since you are not yet assigned a major.
- Request a paper copy of application from RES at the counter or send an email request to ugadmin@cuhk.edu.hk;
- Submit the completed application form with (1) a letter stating reason(s) for transfer; (2) an unofficial transcript; (3) a copy of HKDSE result to moon@ie.cuhk.edu.hk (and cc: admin-mieg@ie.cuhk.edu.hk);
- Please refer to the announcement of the Registration and Examination Section around April to June and the website of Department of Information Engineering for the exact schedule of declaration.
- Please note that your application will be processed only after you have declared a major programme.
The performance in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science courses will be taken into consideration to determine admission into the MIEG programme. (Please read the following advice to understand the guidelines for admission into MIEG).
Note: Admitted students under this scheme should adopt the study scheme with Faculty Package of Science.
Admission for Year 2 or above students from other majors: Transfer of Major to MIEG
Students who wish to change their major to the Programme of Mathematics and Information Engineering should submit their application for change of major under CUSIS (select "Program Change"), together with (1) a letter stating reason(s) for transfer; (2) an unofficial transcript and (3) a copy of HKDSE result.
Please refer to the announcement of the Registration and Examination Section around April to June and the website of Department of Information Engineering for the exact schedule of declaration.
The performance in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science courses will be taken into consideration to determine their eligibility to transfer to MIEG.
Note: Admitted students under this group may choose the study scheme with the Faculty Package from either the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Science.
General Requirements from the RES for transfer of major:
Students applying for a change of major should satisfy one of the following minimum conditions:
- Attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in the current academic year;
- Taken course(s) at least 6 units with an average grade of not less than B- that would count towards the major requirements of the programme;
- His/her admission WGPA score (e.g. HKDSE) should be better than the student at the lowest decile who had been successfully admitted to our Programme in the same year that s/he was first admitted to the University.
Students are welcome to approach the Programme Director for information about course selection.
