IE Research Projects Win Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in a row from the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (IEIG) 2024

We are thrilled to share that IE professors Guoliang Xing, Zhenyu Yan, and their students from the Embedded AI and IoT Lab have achieved remarkable success at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (IEIG), bringing home a total of three medals – one gold, one silver, and one bronze. Following the success of IE research in previous editions of IEIG, it is great to see that the research outcomes have attracted significant interest from the broader community.

Gold Medal:

VI-Map: Infrastructure-Assisted RealTime HD Mapping for Autonomous Driving
Dr He Yuze, Professor Xing Guoliang, Professor Yan Zhenyu, Professor Chen Hongkai (Department of Information Engineering)
The first system that exploits the unique cumulative observations made by smart roadside infrastructure to enhance real-time HD map construction for autonomous driving.
A paper of this work was published at MobiCom 2023 and received the Best Community Contribution Award

Silver Medal:

Mozart: A Mobile ToF System for Sensing in the Dark through Phase Manipulation
Professor Xing Guoliang, Dr Xie Zhiyuan, Dr Ouyang Xiaomin (Department of Information Engineering)
A pioneering ToF system that excels in generating high-quality sensing images across diverse light conditions, notably facilitating complex sensing tasks in challenging dark environments.
A paper of this work was published at MobiSys 2023 and received the Best Paper Award

Bronze Medal:

VibVoice: Bone-Conducted Vibration Speech Enhancement on HeadMounted Wearables
Professor Yan Zhenyu, Professor Xing Guoliang, He Lixing, Hou Haozheng (Department of Information Engineering)
A new speech enhancement system exploiting bone-conducted vibration to remove dynamic noises. The system is compatible with most existing ear-/head-worn wearable and wireless earphone devices.

The International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva is the largest global exhibition devoted exclusively to inventions. All entries have been evaluated by an international jury of specialists. This year’s exhibition showcased over 1,035 inventions from 38 countries and regions. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has achieved unprecedented success, winning a stunning 32 awards in this important annual global event dedicated solely to inventions. The awarded inventions include 20 from the Faculty of Medicine, six from the Faculty of Engineering (three from the Department of Information Engineering), and five from the Faculty of Science.
